The Rise and Fall of King Uzziah
A Meditation on 2 Chronicles 26
The story of King Uzziah in 2 Chronicles 26 is a powerful reminder of the dangers of pride and the importance of seeking God. Uzziah began his reign at just 16 years old, following in the footsteps of his father, King Amaziah. Scripture tells us, “He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD… He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah… and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper” (2 Chronicles 26:4-5).
God blessed Uzziah greatly. He defeated the Philistines, strengthened Judah’s defenses, and built a powerful army. His fame spread far and wide as he led with strength and vision. Yet the turning point came when pride crept in. Emboldened by his success, Uzziah broke God’s law by burning incense in the temple, a role reserved for priests. Confronted by the priests, Uzziah responded in anger. God immediately struck him with leprosy, and he lived the rest of his life in isolation, cut off from the house of the Lord (26:21).
Uzziah’s story highlights a simple yet profound truth: “As long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper” (26:5). His downfall began the moment he stopped seeking God and relied on his own strength. This is a pattern we see throughout scripture and in our own lives. When we forget that our blessings and victories come from God, pride takes root, and the consequences can be devastating.
Whether we are leaders or not, Uzziah’s story is a cautionary tale. We are called to seek God daily, recognizing him as the source of all success. The moment we take credit for what he has done, we risk stepping away from his presence. Instead, let us walk in humility, seeking Jesus in all things, and prospering under his gracious provision.
